Driven to Succeed: How Nicole Appleton Built a Multi-Million-Dollar Trucking Empire

When Nicole Appleton first stepped into the trucking world at just 19, few believed she could thrive in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Today, she owns a thriving multi-million-dollar trucking business, defying expectations and breaking barriers along the way.

Starting from Scratch

Nicole’s journey began with grit and determination. After six years of reliable work as a truck driver, she had saved enough to finance her first truck. This milestone came with sacrifices—she shared a house with four others to cut costs and flipped a countryside property to supplement her savings.

Her first major obstacle came when she approached the bank for financing. Sceptical of her abilities, they demanded video proof that she could handle a truck, including navigating tricky gear changes. Even after proving her skill, the bank dragged their feet for six months, citing outdated assumptions about her future: “She’ll get married, have kids, and quit.”

Fortunately, Nicole had a champion in her broker—a determined woman who fought alongside her. Together, they convinced the bank to approve her loan, and Nicole took her first big step toward entrepreneurship.

Battling Industry Bias

Breaking into the trucking industry as a business owner presented new challenges. Allies turned into adversaries, and harsh rumours followed. Some even claimed that her success could only come from “sleeping her way to the top.”

Despite the negativity, Nicole’s professionalism and determination prevailed. Over time, her reliability and expertise earned her respect and consistent work, proving her detractors wrong.

Breaking Barriers and Building a Legacy

Running a 24/7 trucking business is no small feat, but Nicole’s dedication knows no bounds. She’s a hands-on leader who provides unwavering support to her team, especially her female drivers. Nicole often steps in personally to handle tough situations on job sites, using her extensive knowledge of National Heavy Vehicle Laws and the Construction Industry to gain the respect of sceptical supervisors.

Nicole’s leadership is rooted in resilience and a commitment to paying it forward. A proud First Nations woman with a Kinaway-certified business, she has created opportunities for others in her community. Her innovative pilot program helps aspiring truck owners secure grants covering up to 30% of their initial investment. Participants are guaranteed work at sustainable rates, allowing them to cover wages, pay off truck loans, and turn a profit, all while receiving ongoing mentorship. After five years, participants own a $200,000+ asset outright.

One standout success story is Riley, who joined Nicole’s team at 18. With Nicole’s guidance, Riley overcame financial hurdles, replaced her unreliable car with a brand-new vehicle, and built confidence in her role. Now, Riley is planning to purchase her own truck, providing work for a family member as a driver while paying it off—an inspiring example of Nicole’s program in action.

Redefining “Having It All”

Nicole’s life is a testament to balancing ambition with family. Even during labour with her now 2-year-old son, she was on the phone with clients and hired her first sales rep shortly after leaving the hospital. Since becoming a mother, Nicole has repeatedly doubled her business’s turnover, attributing her success to building a strong team and letting go of the need to micromanage.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Back yourself, stay strong and persistent, hire a team to support you, and let go a little. You can’t grow if you burn out.”

Nicole Appleton is more than a business owner; she’s a trailblazer, mentor, and advocate for change in an industry that once doubted her. Through her determination, she’s not only proven that women can have it all but also created pathways for others to follow in her tyre tracks.
